Capturing the castle

Perched on a rocky embankment above the River Tweed, Neidpath Castle is an iconic Borders landmark – it’s also a year-round favourite for local photographers. As part of our Historic Tweed Valley celebrations, we share a handful of seasonal snaps featuring one of our great local treasures.

Historic Charm

Neidpath is a rare example of a fortified medieval tower house – and one that remains amazingly preserved given the action it has seen. The thick stone walls, hidden staircases and wonderful tapestries are mostly unchanged in the 700 years since the first families stayed here.

Summer beauty

Each June, Neidpath Castle is the dramatic setting for the historic installation of the Warden of Neidpath ceremony. This poignant service precedes the riding of the boundaries and a spectacular fording of the River Tweed by horses and riders just a few hundred metres downstream.

River Life

The deep pools beneath Neidpath are said to have been a favourite swim spot of Maid of Neidpath author, Sir Walter Scott. They continue to attract local swimmers today, along with paddlers of a different kind: canoeists and kayakers exploring the Tweed Valley Canoe Trail.

Autumn splendour

What better time of year to enjoy views of the castle than autumn, when the landscape around is ablaze with colour. The Neidpath Castle Circuit is spectacular through the autumn months, taking in the castle and handsome Neidpath Viaduct further upstream. Have your cameras ready …

Castle dreams

Mary, Queen of Scots was a guest at Neidpath Castle in 1563. Couples looking for a taste of royal life can also enjoy exclusive use of the castle, dinner for two in the drawing room and a memorable sleepover in Queen Mary’s Chamber – complete with cosy log fire and four poster bed.

WInter wonder

Carols by candlelight, castle tours and a special Christmas craft fair were a highlight of the Neidpath winter calendar in 2023. Look out for more of this – plus striking snowy scenes like those above – once the winter months arrive. It makes for a perfect white wedding venue, too!
