There is something about this time of year that just gets the belly rumbling – particularly if you’ve been out walking, running, riding or just generally exploring outdoors. Luckily, we’ve got plenty of cosy pit-stops that will satisfy even the heartiest of appetites.

The Horseshoe Inn, Eddleston
A proper, characterful old pub, The Horseshoe Inn serves excellent food from an extensive menu covering everything from light bites to outstanding mains. Drinks hit the mark too, with a wide selection of real ales, craft beers, artisan gin and much more. Family and dog friendly. Food served 12pm to 9pm daily. Also close by: Barony Castle; The Scots Pine Café; Cringletie House.

Tontine Hotel, Peebles
A genteel retreat in the heart of Peebles, the Tontine Hotel serves seasonally inspired food with a range of dining options: choose from the stylish bistro, a cosy lounge (with roaring fire), the elegant Adam Room and even a secret garden. Family and dog friendly. Food served daily 8am to 8pm (breakfast to dinner). Also close by: Coltman’s Kitchen, Deli & Bar; County Hotel; Crown Hotel.

Peel Café, Glentress
A glass-fronted haven for mountain bikers, runners and walkers, the Peel Café is the end (or start) of many a Glentress adventure. Serves up coffee, breakfast rolls, snacks and main meals, including signature loaded veggie or beef chilli nachos. Tray bakes, scones and cakes also all fly out the door on a daily basis together with Peebles Hydro-brewed beers and lagers. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Dogs welcome too. Open daily 9am to 4pm (Mon to Fri), 9am to 5pm (Sat & Sun). Also close by: Peebles Hydro, The Glentress Hotel (see below).

The Glentress Hotel
A super-friendly and outdoorsy spot, The Glentress Hotel is located at the foot of one of the UK’s premier mountain bike trail centres. Delicious choice of lunches and dinners, plus great selection of coffee, cakes and light bites. The beer is good too, particularly when quaffed outside on the sun-drenched terrace (it can happen). Open daily 9am to 8pm. Also close by: Peel Café (see above).

Nashy’s Coffee House, Cardrona
A hugely popular stop on the Tweed Valley Railway Path and it’s easy to see why. Housed in an old railway building, Nashy’s dishes up everything from hot rolls, toasties, burgers and breakfasts to truly epic hot chocolate. It’s big, it’s filling and just what’s needed after time spent outside. Open Tues to Sat 10am to 4pm. Also close by: Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Spa.

No. 1 Peebles Road, Innerleithen
A special little place for foodies and coffee lovers, No.1 Cafe has gained something of a cult following, particularly amongst mountain bikers. It offers creative (and filling) plates of veggie and vegan goodness, plus spectacularly good coffee from Steampunk. Breakfasts particularly recommended. Try the fully-loaded omelettes or the waffles with berries, banana and maple syrup. Open Thurs to Mon, 8am-4.30pm. Also close by: Traquair Arms Hotel, Saffron Restaurant.

Café Sitooterie, Innerleithen
Café Sitooterie offers deliciously creative breakfasts, snacks and light lunches, all inspired by what is fresh, local and seasonal. Excellent selection of teas and coffees, plus local craft beers, whisky, gins and good wine. Covered, heated seating in the garden, too. Open Wed to Sun, 10am-4pm. Also close by: Loulabelles (see banner image), Sweet Spot Café (at Innerleithen Golf Club), Caberston Farm Coffee Shop.
